Team 28

Throughout the 2010 cycling season, LIVESTRONG and its partners have raised awareness of the world’s cancer burden and the people fighting against the disease. And on the final day of the Tour de France Lance Armstrong and Team RadioShack made one last statement, celebrating the completion of the Tour by wearing jerseys emblazoned with the number 28, a symbol of support for the 28 million people living with cancer.

While that, in itself was an amazing scene, that is not the only statement LIVESTRONG, Team RadioShack and our partners made on Sunday.

Kristy Fasbinder of Chicago was training for the 2008 Chicago Marathon. She was going out for a new PR, it being her third marathon. A severe toothache was bothering her a few weeks before the race, so she went to have things checked out. She ended up going through a series of root canals and oral surgeries leading up to the race. She ran Chicago as planned, though didn’t do as well as she’d hoped.

I can go to the Treasury Department’s website and find out with certainty what the national debt is to the penny, today. I can go to any ATM, withdraw money from my own account, and get an immediate balance. And with a few touches on an iPhone, I can identify my exact location anywhere in the States, search for restaurants within a half-mile radius, have a meal, and submit my review of the restaurant afterwards. All of this is enabled through information technology and it has played a dramatic role in changing our society.
