This Wednesday, October 1st at 10pm EST (times and dates of broadcast differ by location, check your local listings), PBS stations will be airing In The Family. In The Family brings to life the story of young women looking for balance between quality of life and cancer prevention, in the face of a genetic mutation. This film humanizes the statistics and sheds light on the physical and emotional considerations that are part of this arduous decision making process.
The Lance Armstrong Foundation believes in everyone’s right to live life on their own terms and In The Family truly demonstrates this principle while highlighting the power of information and virtue of personal strength. After the broadcast you can visit www.inthefamilyfilm.com to chat about the issues raised in the film with viewers nationwide, to learn more hereditary cancer and genetic testing, and to ask a question to a Genetic Counselor from the National Society of Genetic Counselors.
To learn more about the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act, which is discussed in the film, check out either this or this previous blog posting on the LIVESTRONG Blog.

Reading the news this morning, I was sad to learn that cancer claimed Paul Newman yesterday. Here’s another one of our greatest taken by a disease we can and should do more against. Our thoughts are with his family and the many people who loved him as they adjust to this profound loss.
Few of us haven’t been touched by one of Paul Newman’s films. And everyone knows he started a multi-million dollar company that poured every dime of profit into charities. What fewer people knew of was his devotion to children facing cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. He started the Hole in the Wall Gang camp in 1988 to provide children and their families with much-needed R&R, allow them to connect with parents and kids facing the same struggles and let them recharge together in a beautiful setting. His efforts helped thousands of children and families when they needed it the most.
For me, Paul Newman is a great example of a guy who truly had it all – great career, wonderful family and a strong sense of service - and was willing to share it with everyone who needed his help. He was special to the American cancer community and we’ll miss him a lot.

We are sad to hear that Paul Newman lost his battle to cancer last night. Our thoughts and prayers go to his family and friends.
Newman was a hero in the world of philanthropy and his Newman’s Own brand and Hole in the Wall Gang Camp serve as models for all of us trying to make a difference in the lives of others.

Press conference done! Great response to the need driving this whole initiative. Lots of cycling questions but even more about cancer and the awareness campaign launched today. Most refreshing and invigorating was “how can I help”, the refrain heard over and over.

Lance, President Clinton and Mayor Bloomberg just spoke and made their case for taking LIVESTRONG global.
Mayor Bloomberg and his foundation made a commitment to our global fight. We could not be more excited and thankful to Mayor Bloomberg for joining us in this fight.
We would also like to thank President Clinton and all of the staff of the Clinton Global Initiative for allowing Lance to share the stage with so many other amazing people trying to make the world a better place. President Clinton in his remarks referred to Lance as “one leader who empowers others” and that is our hope with this campaign. That Lance, and his return to professional cycling, will serve as a catalyst to bring individuals, organizations, corporations and governments together to fight this disease.
Make sure you tune back in at 12 ET for Lance’s press conference to find out more about our plans to take this fight to the world.
You can also learn more about this initiative and how you can get involved by visiting www.livestrong.org/global
You can also follow Doug Ulman’s twitter stream from the event in the left hand navigation of the blog.
