At the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Summit in 2009 we initiated a global call for Commitments to the fight cancer. Nearly 300 organizations, individuals, leaders and corporations made formal Commitments. As a way of highlighting their immense efforts in battling this disease, we will feature a different organization each week, sharing stories of progress and success from around the globe.
This week brings us to Nigeria, to take a deeper look at BRECAN’s efforts to tackle breast cancer.
In Nigeria, the perception of breast cancer as a disease that has no cure is deeply entrenched. Worse still are the myths and false beliefs about what causes breast cancer and how it can be treated. These myths and misconceptions are responsible for, to a large extent, the poor clinical outcomes in most hospitals in the country. In an effort to change this mindset and prove that breast cancer is not a death sentence, BRECAN created an innovative, fun-filled out-door event called Jog for Life.

What started in Ibadan with less than 100 participants in 2002 has grown to be an event that is now held in three cities every October where over 3000 dynamic and diverse participants register to take action against breast cancer. Apart from raising awareness about breast cancer, Jog for Life has been critical in fundraising for the BRECAN Hope Lodge.
The untold hardship encountered by many patients and their caregivers in Ibadan compelled BRECAN to seek innovative ways to lend a helping hand in the local community. With unshakable commitment and the support of community members, BRECAN is building a “home away from home” for breast cancer out-patients and their family members and caregivers traveling to the University College Hospital in Ibadan for treatment. The lodge will offer not only affordable accommodation, but an atmosphere of serenity and a place to connect with others who are going through the same cancer experience. With each passing Day, the Hope Lodge is closer to completion, giving hope and providing strength to Ibadan’s community. Below are computer generated pictures of what the center will ultimately look like.

We are so proud of BRECAN’s efforts are are honored to count them amongst our LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Summit Commitment Makers.
