The Howard County, Maryland board of health unanimously approved regulations that will ban youth under the age of 18 from using indoor tanning devices making it the first jurisdiction to pass this type of measure in the United States. The vote took place after hearing from those for and against the regulations. Health Officer Dr. Peter Beilenson introduced the regulations in September. Tuesday, he defended the measure. “Teenagers are much more likely to burn with indoor tanning,” he said. “Fifty-eight percent report burning in indoor tanning. This weekend we announced our support for health care legislation being considered in the House of Representatives. We heard a lot of feedback and that’s the beauty of the LIVESTRONG community. Below is a letter we sent yesterday to the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the White House in support of H.R. 3962 – the Affordable Health Care for America Act. We also sent letters to members of the House. We are joined by a number of other organizations in support of the House bill, including the American Cancer Society, AARP, American Medical Association, American Public Health Association, National Patient Advocate Foundation and Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.
