Unite and Fight - Livestrong Blog

In February, Lance and LIVESTRONG went to Australia to unveil our new LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Campaign and to take part in the Tour Down Under. To add more attention to the global campaign, the Carlton Australian Football Club donned yellow for their match this Sunday to raise awareness for people affected by cancer in their country. The team will auction off the guernseys to raise funds for the Peter MacCallum Centre. The Brisbane Broncos Rugby League team also wore yellow and the funds raised will go to the Queensland Cancer Council.

FoxSports Australia featured our “Global Commitment” video during the live broadcast of the Carlton AFL game Sunday and during the Brisbane Broncos Rugby League game Saturday morning. Tens of thousands of Carlton game attendees saw the video on the arena jumbo tron.

In February we met with several organizations and leaders in the country, including cancer survivor and Australian Treasurer, Wayne Swan and Kevin Rudd, Australia’s Prime Minister. Mr. Rudd pledged to the public that the government plans to invest a record $2 billion (over 5 years) to build a world-class cancer care system in Australia, including investing in infrastructure at cancer centers, new cancer medicines, and improving cancer care, support and monitoring. We have been so appreciative of his efforts, the efforts of Mr. Swan, members of Parliament and the tireless efforts of the Australian NGO’s. We are with you in the fight against this terrible disease.

We are so excited that the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer message is alive and well in Australia and look forward to working with the wonderful people in Parliament and on the ground more soon.

One Response to “Australian Football League Helps in the Fight Against Cancer”

  1. Danny says:

It’s a shame that Lance didn’t get to meet with the Australian Rules Footballer, Adam Ramanauskas, from Essendon. He is a cancer survivor and has been active in supporting the cancer council’s in Australia in promoting their message.

It would have been great to see both he and Lance together, as ‘Rama’ is probably the one person in Australia who most closely resembles Lance’s story. Struck down by cancer, battling through it, only to suffer a reoccurrence, beating it again and playing AFL football at the highest level once more. His is a story of inspiration and he continues to rally people to support the cancer awareness message even now in his retirement.
