More from Colorado

May 14th, 2008 by Tina Hamilton (LAF Staff)

We had the opportunity to meet many enthusiastic members of the LIVESTRONG Army in Colorado – what an exciting day! After attending the DU event, we headed over to the Denver Capitol for a glowstick vigil. Many thanks to Linda Hougham for organizing such an incredible event! Survivors, family and friends gathered on the steps of the Capitol as the evening began with a reading of the Manifesto and a proclamation from the Mayor of Denver.

As the sun began to set in Denver, LAF board member Blaine Rollins, Diane Groff, Celeste Callahan, LAF grantees and anyone else who wanted to share their stories spoke to the crowd about their cancer experiences, support they received when facing cancer, their amazing outlooks on life and the importance of LIVESTRONG. At dusk, we huddled close together, glowsticks in hand, for a moment of silence to honor and remember our loved ones whose lives we have lost to cancer. Linda dedicated her glowstick to her dear friend who lost her battle with cancer last Thursday.

Everyone on the Capitol grounds was touched by Linda’s passion and commitment to fighting cancer. As Linda said, “LIVESTRONG is a way of life,” and she pledged to hold the third annual LIVESTRONG Day glowstick vigil next year. Thank you to all of our new Colorado friends – you rock!!!

I can’t agree more!! Linda is an amazing woman and we never would have made it without her. Special thanks as well to all our other volunteers:
Matt - the sound was perfect, the signs were amazing, and you were our overall hero of the day.
Emily - great job on getting that proclomation from the Mayer.
Joey - our glowstick man, your help and humor were much appreciated.
Anginet and Meghan - our photogs, can’t wait to see the pictures.
Ryan - thanks for all the set up and clean up,
And of course, the ladies from UCCC, Alison and Kirsten - it was great to have you there and your help in planning and putting together this event.
Anyone else who helped us directly or indirectly I missed, thank you too!! Denver is a wonderful place to live, and we showed everyone last night that we are a community that cares and we don’t let a little rain stop us in our fight against cancer!

Our second annual LIVESTRONG Day Colorado was a success! It’s amazing what just 10 to 15 people can do when they put their heads together. Imagine how our event will continue to grow as the years go on!!! Thanks to everyone who came to the event to support our fight against cancer.

It was an honor to be able to photograph this event. I am inspired by Linda and Michelle. They both worked so hard to give us all a time to unite. When Linda said, “We will find a cure in our lifetime”, I felt she was right. The photographs can be found on my site under “the proofs” button.
