Because I’m 8 months pregnant with twins, I was not able to travel for LIVESTRONG Day. I figured that I would host LIVESTRONG Day at my son’s sch00l. I took a lesson from our LIVESTRONG at School curriculum and modified it for 2-6 year olds. Since Montessori education focuses a lot on how to be a good citizen, we talked about how we can help people that are sick feel better. I told a story about a boy named Mikey that was sick and how his mom helped him feel better by bringing him soup and his blankie and teddy bear. When he found out his grandpa had cancer, he wanted to make him feel better, so he brought his grandpa things. Each class had to come up with all the ways they would help Mikey’s grandpa. Here’s a list:
- Make Soup
Bring a Teddy Bear
Make him a card
Bring him flowers
Bring him apples
Tell him “I Love You”
Give him a hug and a kiss
Sing him a song
Read him a book
Bring him a toy and they could play trucks
Make him cookies
It was really cool. Then Amy Nunn and I put all their ideas on strips of paper and we made a paper chain to hang up in the entryway. To finish up the morning we had yellow snacks: banana and lemon pudding and lemonade and each kiddo got a wristband. It was good stuff. There was a brief moment when all the kids broke out into stories of when they were sick and where they last threw up—but besides that we all stayed on subject and they came up with some great ideas! Thanks to the kids at Austin Children’s Montessori. Special thanks to Ms. Lori, Amy and my son Connor for being my helpers!
