People and Politics

Often times we get caught up in policy work and the presidential elections but we never lose sight of the most important piece of the cancer battle – the people who are fighting like crazy for their own lives. I just received the note below from a good friend of mine. Beverly Laird is an awesome human being. I mean awesome. She is a Ph.D., multiple time cancer survivor and super advocate. She has worked with almost of the cancer organizations you can think of as a passionate volunteer. She serves as vice-chair of the NCI Director’s Consumer Liaison Group and makes my life so much easier as the chair. She epitomizes LIVESTRONG. Her note made me think that all of our efforts are meaningless if we don’t constantly remember what is important – that people are diagnosed every day. They have real problems. Real concerns. We must fight for them. Beverly Laird inspires me.

Check out her note…

Doug-

Finally had last treatment today. I was a week late because my platelet count was too low, but today, platelets were nearly normal and Dr. Barnes gave the go-ahead. Now the fun part- waiting and CT scans and doctor visits and much paranoia and hypochondria. All part of being a cancer survivor! And we have to learn to LIVE with it. I wore my LIVESTRONG wristband to EVERY treatment, and I had my LIVESTRONG scarf tied to my bag every time too!

Talk to you Thursday.

Beverly
