Where it all Begins

June 13th, 2007 by Lance Armstrong

The Allman Brothers Band has a song titled “Where it all Begins” and today in the State of Texas those words could not be more true.

Today, Governor Rick Perry signed House Bill 14 (HB14), which establishes the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, at the UT-Southwestern Cancer Center in Dallas and at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. With the signing of this bill the decision will now be turned over to the people of Texas, on November 6th, to approve the three billion dollars in funding for cancer research and prevention.

It has been amazing to see what is possible when cancer organizations, elected officials and concerned citizens unite together to bring about change. It is my hope that the work we have done in the state of Texas can serve as an example to other states and our national government that this is an issue that people care deeply about. And that it will serve as an example to concerned citizens across this country that it is only when they speak up that they will be heard.
