State of Confusion

January 25th, 2007 by Lance Armstrong

With all the attention that cancer has received in the past few weeks - the President’s visit to the National Institutes of Health, the news from the American Cancer Society about declining mortality rates and all the stories sent in response to my article on CNN.com - I tuned into the State of the Union Address (and Democratic response) hoping to hear about our country’s plans for the war on cancer. Hell, it would have been nice if someone had just said the word cancer for a change.

But again we were left on the sidelines waving our hands in the air and begging the coach to put us in the game.

How long will we have to wait until our elected officials show us that a disease that kills one American, every minute of every day is one of their top priorities?

As a formal response to the State of the Union we sent the following communication to everyone who has signed up for the LAF advocacy e-newsletter.

“This week, President George W. Bush delivered his State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress. While the President mentioned two health insurance initiatives during his address, he did not specifically mention how we as a nation are going to win the war on cancer.”
